Medications & Herbal Medicines

OTC & Herbal Medicines: Key Considerations

  • Key Considerations
    • Always talk to your provider before taking any medication or supplement. Not all over-the-counter medications are safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
      • Lack of Regulation: Herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA like conventional medicines, meaning they may contain unlisted ingredients or contaminants.
      • Not All “Natural” is Safe: “Natural” does not mean safe; herbs contain active substances that can pass through the placenta and affect fetal development.
      • First Trimester Risk: The first three months are the most critical for organ development, making it safest to avoid all herbal remedies during this time.

What to Expect –  Second Trimester

Childbirth, Breastfeeding Classes and Birth Doula Services

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months as the optimal choice for nutrition and immune support for most babies.

Most Medicaid plans and some commercial plans will cover the cost of childbirth and breastfeeding classes, lactation support, and doula services.
