The East Jordan Family Health Center and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) are pleased to announce the selection of Mitchell J. Carey, M.D. as the 2009 Family Physician of the Year. Dr. Louis Zako, past president of the MAFP, presented this award to Dr. Carey on June 25th, 2009 at the East Jordan Family Health Center.

Dr. Carey completed his undergraduate education at Grand Valley State College and received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He attended the residency program at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals and following its completion, joined the East Jordan Family Health Center as an obligation to the National Health Service Corps to provide healthcare in rural and medically underserved communities.

After fulfilling this obligation, Dr. Carey and his family chose to make northern Michigan their permanent home. Throughout the past30 years with the Health Center, Dr. Carey has provided family medical care and obstetric services, as well as emergency medicine and inpatient services at Charlevoix Area Hospital and Grandvue Medical Care Facility. He currently serves as the Director of Emergency Services for Charlevoix County and as the Medical Officer for the City of East Jordan, and is a Medical Examiner for Charlevoix County. He previously held positions as the Medical Director of the East Jordan Family Health Center, Chief of Staff for Charlevoix Area Hospital and has served on the legislative committee for the Northern Michigan Medical Society. Dr. Carey is board certified by the American Board of Family Physicians and has been a member of the MAFP since 1979.

Dr. Carey’s commitment to his patients, his community, and his specialty is apparent based on the high regard in which he is held. He was chosen by his peers in recognition of his career as a Family Physician in providing continuing, comprehensive, and compassionate care to the patients he serves and for the positive influence he has made as a role model within his profession and community.

The Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Center is experiencing issues with our internet systems. This has also impacted our East Jordan location phone systems. We are working to resolve this issue with Charter. Thank you for your patience.
