East Jordan Family Health Center’s Board of Directors presented Bluestem Farm with their 2015 Community Health Champion Award on Saturday, October 3, 2015. Bluestem Farm was hosting a farm tour and open drawing event co-sponsored by the Jordan River Arts Council and was presented the award in recognition and appreciation for practicing sustainable community based organic farming and providing family activities and education which promote healthy lifestyles.
The East Jordan Family Health Center’s Board of Directors began an annual tradition of presenting the Community Health Champion award in 2006. This award recognizes those who have dedicated themselves to serving the health care needs of our area.
Mary and Aaron Brower purchased the 80 acre property located at 4218 M-32 Hwy in East Jordan, in May of 2012 and transformed it into Bluestem Farm. Their farm offers certified organic vegetables, pasture-raised eggs and meats and community supported agriculture or CSA shares. This community driven way of life is also incorporated into the different programs offered at the farm such as yoga in the barn, concerts, hay rides and food outreach programs. Through these outreach programs they offer free food to participating schools, a day care and families with kids in participating HeadStart programs through their involvement in the Hoophouses for Health program. This program created by the Michigan Farmers Market Association helps vulnerable families gain access to healthy foods.
