By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the East Jordan Family Health Center had reached an important moment in its history. The organization was no longer just responding to a local need, it was being called upon to help neighboring communities facing the same challenges.

When the Burns Clinic in Bellaire faced closure in 1999, the impact would have been immediate. Patients would lose access to care. Families would be forced to travel. A community would be left without a healthcare provider.

The decision to step in was not easy. It came with financial risk, operational strain, and uncertainty. But it came down to something simple, the mission.

So the Health Center said yes.

On October 1, 1999, Bellaire Family Health Center became part of the organization, preserving access to care and reinforcing a growing role as a regional provider.

Just a few years later, history repeated itself. In Central Lake, a retiring physician once again created a gap in care. Once again, the Health Center was asked to step in. And once again, the answer was yes.

In 2003, the Central Lake Family Health Center opened, expanding access and continuing a pattern that would define the organization’s growth, not expansion for growth’s sake, but expansion driven by community need.

These moments marked a shift. The Health Center was no longer just a single-site clinic. It had become a trusted partner, one that communities could rely on when access to care was at risk.

What made this possible was not just leadership decisions, but the same foundation built from the beginning, community trust, mission-driven thinking, and a willingness to act when it mattered most.

Today, that legacy continues. Every service we offer, every location we operate, and every patient we serve is part of that same commitment, to meet people where they are and ensure care remains close to home.

As we continue celebrating 50 years, April reminds us that growth is not just about getting bigger. It is about showing up when it matters most.

The expansion to Bellaire in 1999 and Central Lake in 2003 were both driven by potential loss of local healthcare, not strategic growth plans. The Health Center stepped in to ensure communities didn’t go without care.

Our behavioral health professionals work alongside primary care providers to support the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our patients. Through counseling, care coordination, and connection to community resources, they help ensure patients receive compassionate, whole-person care.

As our behavioral health program continues to grow, we remain committed to providing integrated care that supports the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

Well Child Exams: Supporting Your Child’s Health at Every Stage 

At Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Centers, Well Child Exams are an important part of helping your child grow, learn, and stay healthy.  These visits do more than check height and weight. They help ensure your child is developing physically, emotionally, and socially, and give you time to talk with your care team about any concerns. 

What happens during a Well Child Exam? 

Your child’s visit may include: 

• Growth and developmental monitoring 
• Complete physical exam 
• Hearing and vision screenings 
• Emotional and behavioral health check-ins 
• Recommended immunizations 
• Completion of school, camp, or sports forms 
• Time to discuss sleep, nutrition, learning, and behavior 

Regular Well Child visits are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help identify concerns early and keep children on track for healthy development. 

Sports Physicals and School Requirements 

Many student-athletes must complete a sports physical before participating in school athletics. According to the Michigan High School Athletic Association, sports physicals must be completed on or after April 15 to be valid for the upcoming school year.  Scheduling a Well Child Exam after April 15 can often meet both requirements, saving you an extra appointment.

Your child’s health today builds the foundation for their future. 

By the early 1980s, the East Jordan Family Health Center had proven something essential: the community wanted and needed local healthcare. The next challenge was ensuring that care remained accessible to everyone, not just in principle, but in practice.

As patient numbers grew, the Health Center began formalizing systems that turned its mission into daily operations. One of the most significant steps was the introduction of a sliding fee scale, ensuring that cost would not prevent patients from seeking care. This approach reinforced a founding belief that healthcare is not a privilege, but a necessity—and that dignity should always be part of the care experience.

Over time, federal and state support played an increasingly important role. Grant funding helped stabilize operations, expand services, and respond to emerging community needs. These resources allowed the Health Center to invest in preventive care, chronic disease management, and expanded access points, while keeping services affordable for patients.

What made these changes work was the same spirit that launched the Health Center in the first place: adaptability. Leadership, providers, and staff consistently found ways to respond to challenges without losing sight of why the organization existed. Programs were added not because they were trendy, but because they met real needs identified by patients and staff alike.

This period marked a quiet but critical shift—from survival to sustainability. The Health Center was no longer just filling a gap; it was building a model of community-based care designed to last.

Today, many of the systems we rely on—integrated services, access-focused programs, and patient-centered decision-making—can be traced back to these foundational years. They remind us that mission isn’t just something written down. It’s something practiced, refined, and protected over time.

As we continue celebrating 50 years, March highlights an important truth: access doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when values are translated into action, again and again.

The Northwest Food Coalition’s mission is to empower member food programs by coordinating and creating resources to achieve regional food security.

The formation of Northwest Food Coalition goes back to 1994, when the Hunger Action Coalition of Detroit reached out to 7 groups around the state to assess hunger and poverty in rural Michigan We were part of a grass roots movement who formed to assist area pantries in dealing with hunger, gathering resources for them, educating the public on needs and strengthening volunteers through a network that gathered and distributed needed food.

Since our inception, our group now includes roughly 70 food pantries, baby pantries and meal sites in 6 counties to address those hunger needs. Through the generous gifts of time, money and food, we are making a difference in the lives of those people who have needs and offer fellowship and caring to their neighbors. The Coalition members provide more than a can of soup or a sandwich, but also demonstrate the caring of one human being for another.

Celebrating 50 Years

The East Jordan Family Health Center was founded in 1976 to meet a simple but urgent need, access to healthcare close to home. What began as a community-driven effort quickly became something more, a place built not only by funding and facilities, but by the people who believed in its mission.

From the earliest days, staff and providers were more than employees. They were neighbors, advocates, and innovators who stepped into multiple roles to ensure patients received care. With limited resources, early teams relied on creativity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to serving the community. Providers were encouraged to live locally, strengthening trust and relationships with the people they cared for.

This hands-on, mission-first approach shaped the culture of the Health Center. Teamwork was essential. Flexibility was expected. Patient needs always came first. That foundation helped the Health Center grow, adapt, and expand services while staying true to its purpose.

Nearly 50 years later, the work looks different, but the spirit remains the same. Today’s teams continue a legacy started by those early staff members who proved that when a community and its caregivers come together, lasting access to healthcare is possible.

Did You Know?

The East Jordan Family Health Center was built through true grassroots support. In its earliest days, funding came from bake sales, business donations, non-interest-bearing community bonds, and even contributions from local fifth graders. The Health Center exists today because the entire community believed access to healthcare was worth investing in.

Celebrating 50 Years of Community Care

In 2026, the East Jordan Family Health Center proudly celebrates 50 years of serving our community—a milestone that reflects five decades of dedication, resilience, and mission-driven care.

Founded in 1976, the Health Center began as a grassroots response to a critical need for primary care in East Jordan after local physicians were no longer available. What started as a small clinic in a rented storefront quickly grew into a trusted community institution, built through bake sales, donated bonds, federal support, and—most importantly—the belief that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay.

Over the years, the Health Center expanded to serve Bellaire and Central Lake, introduced a sliding fee scale, added on-site services like pharmacy and specialty care, and evolved into the integrated, team-based organization we are today. Through leadership changes, healthcare system shifts, and growing community needs, one thing has remained constant: our commitment to being more than healthcare, a place that supports community health, local jobs, prevention, dignity, and connection.

Throughout 2026, we’ll be celebrating this milestone with stories from our history, staff spotlights, throwback photos, and reflections on the impact we’ve made together, culminating in a larger celebration during National Health Center Week in August. Every staff member, past and present, has played a role in this story, and we look forward to honoring the people and purpose that have shaped the last 50 years.
