About the Low-Dose Lung Cancer Screening

A low-dose CT scan is a special kind of X-ray that takes multiple pictures as you lie on a table that slides in and out of the machine. A computer then combines these images into a detailed picture of your lungs. A study on early detection of lung cancer found that the low-dose cancer screening test can reduce mortality for those at high risk. If you’re a current or former smoker over the age of 50, you could meet the high-risk eligibility criteria.

National Lung Cancer Screening Day ,East Jordan Family Health Center
Please Join Us

The American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS NLCRT), American College of Radiology® (ACR), Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC), and GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2) have partnered once again for the fourth annual National Lung Cancer Screening Day (“National LCS Day”) on Saturday, November 8, 2025. As a key initiative of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and in partnership with the ACS NLCRT, ACR, RHEC, GO2, and Veteran’s Health Administration, we are promoting this lifesaving event to help more individuals get screened and raise awareness about lung cancer screening.

The President’s Cancer Panel recommends lung cancer screening as the single most effective strategy for reducing mortality from the disease and helping to close the gap to improve health equity and access to care. To achieve this goal, the President’s Cancer Panel has charged individuals, health systems, and communities with communicating and promoting lung cancer screening.

Learn More
Find a Screening Center

Over ten years have passed since the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF ) first recommended low-dose CT (LDCT) for lung cancer screening, yet lung cancer screening rates remain low with fewer than 1 in 10 eligible individuals undergoing annual LDCT screening. This is a striking contrast to more established screening tests for other cancers, including screening mammography (about 67%), colorectal cancer screening (about 64%), and cervical cancer screening (around 87%).

Access to and utilization of lung cancer screening has been particularly challenging for rural and racial/ethnic minority groups, who face the following barriers:

Likely to live more than 30 minutes away from a designated screening center

May be underinsured

May have lower health literacy levels

May have inadequate access to care

Low utilization rates for lung cancer screening present an opportunity for patient and caregiver advocates, community health organizations, medical professionals, cancer centers, health systems, payers, and industry partners to work together to promote health equity, reduce health care disparities, and enhance accessibility to lifesaving and effective lung cancer screening.

To participate, lung cancer screening centers nationwide are being encouraged to open their doors to patients on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Through the promotion of National LCS Day, screening centers are not only extending screening opportunities to those who may be unaware of this effective, lifesaving screening option, they are also increasing awareness of lung cancer screening within their community.

National LCS Day is meant to serve as a catalyst for year-round screening awareness efforts. Rather than waiting until November to work lung screening into their routine, patients and clinicians alike are encouraged to make accessible screening a year-round priority. Please join the lung cancer community for National LCS Day on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Annual Diabetic (DM) Retinal Eye Exams are now available at both the Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Centers and can be scheduled with your regular provider visit.

For people with diabetes, this exam is an essential part of managing your health. High blood glucose levels can damage the tiny blood vessels in your eyes, leading to vision problems or even blindness if left untreated. The sooner these changes are detected, the sooner you and your care team can act to protect your vision.

Our RetinaVue 700 Imager provides high-quality retinal images in less than 30 minutes—no eye drops or special preparation needed. The camera is designed to capture detailed images without chemical dilation for most patients, offering a comfortable, convenient way to screen for diabetic eye disease. If the images are not clear enough due to cataracts or very small pupils, your provider may refer you to an eye specialist for a traditional dilated exam.

Images are reviewed by a board-certified ophthalmologist, and results are shared directly with your provider for a complete picture of your eye health.

Benefits:

Detects early signs of diabetic eye disease

Comfortable, quick, and non-invasive

No chemical dilation usually needed

Available at both Bellaire and East Jordan locations

Can be scheduled with your annual or diabetes exam

Please note: Retinal imaging at our health centers is available only for patients with diabetes. If you are not diabetic but would like to schedule a routine eye exam, we encourage you to contact your local optometrist or ophthalmologist for ongoing vision care.

Protect your eyesight, schedule your annual Diabetic (DM) Retinal Eye Exam today!
The post Diabetic (DM) Retinal Eye Exams first appeared on East Jordan Family Health Center.

After you get your results

If your test result is positive

If you use any type of antibody test and have a positive result, you will need a follow-up test to confirm your results.

If you test in a community program or take an HIV self-test and it’s positive, you should go to a health care provider for follow-up testing.

If you test in a health care setting or a lab and it’s positive, the lab will conduct the follow-up testing, usually on the same blood sample as the first test.

If the follow-up test is also positive, it means you have HIV.

Receiving an HIV diagnosis can be life changing. Take time to process the news. Then, find HIV care and start treatment as soon as possible. HIV treatment can make the amount of HIV in your body so low that a test can’t detect it (undetectable viral load). Getting and keeping an undetectable viral load is the best way to stay healthy and protect others.

You should share your HIV status with your sex or needle-sharing partners. Communicating your HIV status allows each person to take steps to stay healthy.

Testing positive for HIV does not mean you have AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the most advanced stage of HIV disease. However, HIV can lead to AIDS if a person with HIV does not get treatment or take care of their health.

If your test result is negative

A negative result doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t have HIV. That’s because of the window period.

If you get an HIV test after a potential HIV exposure and the result is negative, get tested again after the window period for the type of test you took.

If you test again after the window period, have no possible HIV exposure during that time, and the result is negative, you do not have HIV.

If you’re sexually active or use needles to inject drugs, continue to take actions to prevent HIV.

If you have certain risk factors, you should continue getting tested at least once a year.

Remember, your HIV test result reveals only your HIV status. If your test result is negative, that doesn’t mean your partner’s test result is negative. Consider getting tested with your partner so you can both know your HIV status and take steps to keep yourselves healthy.

Why get tested

It is important to get tested for hepatitis C, especially if you think you’ve been exposed. If you do have hepatitis C your doctor can start treatment as soon as possible.

Left untreated, chronic hepatitis C can cause serious health problems, including liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death.

Many people do not have symptoms, so testing is the only way to know if you have hepatitis C.

Testing methods

There are several tests for hepatitis C. Consult with your doctor/nurse to determine the type of test you need.

The first is an HCV antibody test. There are different ways to test for HCV antibodies:

Lab-based: The doctor or nurse will take a sample of your blood and send it to the lab for analysis, which will take longer to get results.

Quick test/rapid test: This is usually called a “rapid point of care” test because the doctor or nurse will take a sample of your blood and be able to analyze it in about 30 minutes.

Home-based: You take a sample of your own blood and send it to a lab to be analyzed.

All three tests look for antibodies to HCV in your blood. Antibodies are proteins produced and released into the bloodstream as a defense when someone gets infected.

Antibody tests are used to find out if you have ever been infected with HCV. If the result is positive or reactive it may not mean that you currently have hepatitis C.

If your antibody test is positive or reactive, the doctor or the lab will automatically do a second test on your blood to see if you still have the virus in your body. This test is called a qualitative nucleic acid test (NAT) for HCV RNA, and it looks for the presence of the virus in your blood.

If you might have been exposed to HCV within the past 6 months, your doctor should order a NAT for HCV RNA rather than an HCV antibody test.

Testing results

Based on your results and type of test, you may or may not need follow-up testing.

Non-reactive antibody test result

A non-reactive — or negative — antibody test result means you are not currently infected with HCV. If you don’t have antibodies in your blood, your doctor won’t need to do the follow-up NAT HCV RNA test.

However, if you think you might have been exposed to hepatitis C in the last 6 months, you will need to be tested again for antibodies.

Reactive antibody test result

A reactive — or positive — antibody test result means you have been infected with HCV at some point in your life. Once infected, you will always have antibodies in your blood. This is true if you have cleared the virus, have been cured, or still have the virus in your blood.

If your antibody test is reactive, the doctor will automatically test your blood sample for the virus using the NAT for HCV RNA.

If the NAT for HCV RNA is negative, that means you were previously infected with HCV but it is no longer in your body.

If the NAT test is positive, that confirms you are currently infected with HCV.
