Cynthia received her Master of Social Work degree from Spring Arbor University and is a certified advanced alcohol and drug counselor. Cynthia is the Director of Behavioral Health and has been with the Health Center since June 2018. She likes to blend different modalities to focus on individual needs to meet their goal. Cynthia enjoys working with the team to provide treatment to those with mental health, substance use, or medical issues.

Melissa received her Master of Social Work from Spring Arbor University and also holds degrees in Early Childhood and Family Life Education. She was East Jordan Family Health Center’s first integrated behavioral health counselor and continues to work as an outpatient therapist within the integrated model, blending both medical and behavioral health care in one setting.

Melissa’s therapeutic approach is brief and solution-focused, utilizing both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) informed skill development. She co-facilitates the clinic’s DBT-informed skill group, which is held weekly throughout the year. Melissa is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and is certified in advanced alcohol and drug counseling.

KaLeigh Shepard, LMSW, is a licensed social worker with a Masters of Social Work from Michigan State University. She is passionate about helping people heal and grow. She is fully licensed and has certifications in CBT, Motivational Interviewing Skills, and SMART Recovery. She is also working towards full certification in EMDR and an Advanced Master’s Program of Treatment of Trauma.

EJFHC has benefited from Dr. Winsten’s expertise in telepsychiatry since 2022. A Board-Certified Psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience across various practice settings, Dr. Winsten brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.

Michael Winsten, DO is an experienced psychiatrist who has been practicing since 1990. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Iowa and went on to complete his residency in psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He also completed an internship in Northern Michigan, a place he still returns to regularly with his family.

Throughout his career, Dr. Winsten has provided care in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, correctional facilities, and military environments. His clinical expertise includes psychopharmacologic management, individual and group psychotherapy, case supervision, and forensic psychiatry consultation. He has developed particular expertise in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with a focus on psychopharmacologic interventions, and is known for his collaborative, team-based approach to care.

Leah Blacktop received her Master’s in Social Work at Grand Valley State University. Leah has previous experience working in a residential setting and performing outpatient therapy with children, adolescents, and families. Leah is passionate about person-centered care and exercising strength-based approaches to celebrate individualism, self-efficacy, and empowerment in an empathetic and supportive environment.

Emerald Harring received her Master’s in Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University. Emerald has a development plan as Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Emerald has experience working in outpatient therapy with substance use and supporting survivors of domestic violence.

Emerald works directly with our providers to offer an integrated health approach, blending both medical and behavioral health care into one setting. This model recognizes that both medical and behavioral health factors are important parts of a person’s overall health.

Jessie began working at East Jordan Family Health Center with a Bachelor of Social Work degree as the Behavioral Health Coordinator. Jessie has most recently transitioned into the newest integrative behavioral health counselor after graduating with her Master in Social Work degree from Spring Arbor University. By working directly with our providers, she integrates the medical and mental health care models into one setting by understanding that both medical and behavioral health factors are important parts of a person’s overall health. Jessie offers brief intervention for patients utilizing person-centered and strength-based approaches to motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
